Discover Alsace, where vine-covered hillsides meet the Vosges Mountains and storybook villages punctuate the landscape. This journey through France’s northeastern corner reveals a region shaped by both French and German influence, celebrated for its wine and cheese traditions. From mountain dairies producing distinctive Munster to family wineries crafting aromatic whites, we’ll explore the flavors, cobbled lanes, and culinary heritage that define Alsace.

  • Experience Alsace’s cheese-making heritage on working farms in the High Vosges, observing traditional Munster AOP production and tasting farmstead cheeses at mountain dairies.
  • Visit family-run wineries along the Alsace Wine Route, from Marlenheim’s historic estates to cellars known for crisp Riesling and aromatic Gewürztraminer.
  • Wander through enchanting medieval villages including Riquewihr's preserved fortifications and cobblestone lanes, Colmar's fairy-tale canals and half-timbered architecture, and Obernai's flower-filled streets surrounding Place du Marché.
  • Prepare traditional Alsatian cuisine in a hands-on cooking class with a local chef, working with seasonal ingredients before sitting down to enjoy your creations paired with local wines
  • Explore Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, a restored 12th-century castle perched above the Alsace Plain.

Day 1

Arrive Frankfurt

Welcome! A private driver will greet you at the Frankfurt Airport and transport you across the border to our accommodations in the Alsace capital of Strasbourg. Check in and have some time to relax and get settled. This evening, we’ll kick things off with introductions and an apéritif followed by a wine-paired Welcome Dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Day 2

STRASBOURG

After a leisurely morning, meet a local guide for a gourmet walking tour through Strasbourg's historic center. Stroll past the soaring Strasbourg Cathedral and through La Petite France, a neighborhood of half-timbered houses lining picturesque canals, while tasting iconic Alsatian specialties including tarte flambée, kougelhopf, and the region's celebrated Munster cheese at a local fromagerie. Following the tour, embark on a cruise along the Ill River for views of the city's architecture from the water. The remainder of the afternoon and evening are yours to explore. Our Travel Director is happy to provide recommendations for dinner.

Day 3

Munster Valley & Colmar

This morning, head south into the Vosges Mountains to the Munster Valley, the heart of Alsace's cheese-making tradition. Begin at a working farm where we'll tour the facilities and learn how traditional Munster cheese is made. Observe a demonstration of the cheese-making process and taste three distinct cheeses—Munster fermier, tommette, and Barikass—paired with Alsatian wine. Continue to La Maison du Fromage, a museum dedicated to the region's dairy heritage, where we'll discover the traditions of mountain dairy farming and witness another demonstration of Munster cheese production before enjoying a tasting and lunch at the museum's restaurant.

After lunch, travel to the nearby fairytale town of Colmar for a brief introduction to this picturesque medieval town, followed by free time to wander the half-timbered buildings and flower-lined canals at your own pace. Return to Strasbourg in the late afternoon.

Day 4

Alsace Wine Route & Obernai

Today, we’ll venture into the heart of the Alsace Wine Route, stopping at a family-run estate where generations of winemaking tradition come to life. Tour the cellars, learn about the unique terroir and winemaking methods that shape Alsace's renowned white wines, and taste crisp Rieslings, aromatic Gewürztraminers, and other varietals for which the region is celebrated.

From here, continue to the charming town of Obernai, known for its medieval ramparts, half-timbered houses, and flower-filled streets. Enjoy free time for lunch and a stroll through the picturesque Place du Marché. Afterward, visit another local winery for a tour and tasting, discovering more of the diverse expressions of Alsatian wine. On our way back to Strasbourg, we’ll stop for a traditional raclette dinner, an Alpine specialty.

Day 5

Vosges Cheese & Riquewihr

After breakfast, we’ll head into the High Vosges Mountains to a working cheese farm where mountain dairy traditions continue. Tour the facilities to see how Munster AOP cheese is made using time-honored methods, observe wheels aging in the cellars, and learn about the patient process that develops the cheese's distinctive character. Taste three farmstead cheeses paired with Gewürztraminer, discovering the interplay between Alsace's two greatest culinary treasures.

Continue to a lunch of Alsatian cuisine followed by free time in the preserved medieval village of Riquewihr. Wander the cobblestone streets, with an optional stop at the Cave à Fromages de Riquewihr for cheese lovers.

Later, we’ll head to Haut Koenigsbourg Castle, a medieval masterpiece built in the 12th century, high above the Alsace plain and Wine Route vineyards. Join a guide to explore its chambers, drawbridges, and medieval weaponry before returning to Strasbourg for an open evening.

Day 6

Alsatian Cooking & Marlenheim

This morning, roll up your sleeves for a hands-on cooking class led by a local chef. Learn to prepare traditional Alsatian dishes using seasonal ingredients, discovering the techniques and flavors that define the region's flavorful cuisine. After working together in the kitchen, we’ll sit down to enjoy the fruits of our labor over lunch paired with local wines.

In the afternoon, travel to Marlenheim, known as "the door of the Alsace Wine Route" and the northern gateway to this legendary trail. Visit a family-run winery for a tour of the cellars and a tasting of their wines, learning about the terroir and winemaking traditions that have defined this corner of Alsace for generations. Return to Strasbourg for an open evening.

Day 7

Strasbourg

Enjoy a free morning to explore Strasbourg at your own pace. Perhaps revisit La Petite France, browse the local markets, do some last-minute shopping, or relax at a café. In the afternoon, step back in time with a private visit to the Historic Wine Cellar of the Strasbourg Hospices, a site dating back to the Middle Ages. Once used to store wine, grain, and other perishable goods, the cellar still houses barrels of wine, including a vintage from 1472, believed to be one of the oldest white wines in a barrel anywhere in the world. This unique visit offers a fascinating glimpse into Alsace's rich winemaking heritage.

After the tour, enjoy some free time before gathering this evening for a festive Farewell Dinner, toasting the journey and the memories made along the way.

Departure Frankfurt

Activity Level

This trip has been designed to include daily exploratory walks that range from one to three hours. Each day, whether touring a city or winery, guests should be prepared to be on their feet for multiple continuous hours. Guests should feel comfortable strolling along cobbled surfaces, walking up and down stairs, and sauntering down uneven nature paths. Europe tends to have Old World infrastructure (narrow cobblestone streets, lack of elevators, etc.), which can leave some areas inaccessible. Typically, our more invigorating walks are included as optional activities.  If your mobility is limited in any way, or if you have questions, please contact our Guest Services team at guestservices@experi.com.
