Fun Facts

Lyon is the gastronomical capital of France

Lyon has been and remains a popular place for food lovers. The city is home to famous chef Paul Bocuse and is renowned for its high quality food offerings - from Michelin starred restaurants & haute-cuisine to the simple and convivial Bouchon Lyonnais - Lyon has something for everyone. Try the famous pâté en croûte, a delicious cooked pâté in shortcrust pastry, or enjoy a Tarte à la praline, a tart topped with pink pralines, with your afternoon coffee to immerse yourself in the local cuisine.

Beaujolais Nouveau started as a celebration of the end of the grape-picking season

The story of the Beaujolais Nouveau goes back to the early 19th Century when winemakers used to ferment grapes soon after the harvest to create a light young wine intended to be enjoyed by the local workers and villagers to celebrate the end of the harvest. In the second half of the 20th Century the practice was officially recognised by law, and the third Thursday in November became the official release date for the Beaujolais Nouveau. What followed was a clever marketing campaign which introduced Beaujolais Nouveau to a greater audience including a little help from the British who launched the well publicized Beaujolais Run - a race to bring back the first bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau to London.

The Northern Rhône is very small

Did you know that only 5% of the wine produced in the Rhône Valley comes from the Northern Rhône? In fact the entire Northern Rhône is smaller than the entire Chateauneuf du Pape vineyards. With just under 3,000 hectares of vine, the Northern Rhône is a tiny part of the French vineyard but the wines of Hermitage, Cornas or Côte-Rôtie have developed a reputation that reaches far beyond the French borders.

The Vieux Lyon is full of secret passageways

It is estimated that there are as many as 400 secret passageways or traboules in Lyon with approximately 40 open to the public. The word traboule comes from the Latin ‘trans-ambulare’ meaning to pass through. These passageways date back to the 4th Century and were designed to give inhabitants a more direct access to fresh water. They were later used by the silk & craft workers to carry their heavy merchandise to the river, not only they are a faster route, most of them are also covered or partly covered providing shelter from the weather.
