Fun Facts

The Champagne Appellation

Champagne is a region with a well-protected designation of origin, strictly regulated by French law. Only sparkling wines produced within the designated geographical boundaries of Champagne can bear the prestigious label. This legal protection ensures the authenticity and quality of true Champagne, preventing imitations from diluting the region's unique legacy.

The Art of Sabrage

In Champagne, the art of sabrage, or "sabering," is a time-honored tradition that adds an element of theatricality to celebrations. Sabrage involves opening a bottle of Champagne by using a saber to break the glass at the bottle's neck, resulting in a clean, dramatic break. The practice dates back to Napoleon Bonaparte's era when it was believed to have been a way to celebrate victories in battle. To this day, skilled sommeliers and wine enthusiasts showcase their talent by sabering Champagne bottles on special occasions.

Bordeaux is the largest AOC vineyard in France

With just under 125,000 hectares (over 300,000 acres) of vineyards and approximately 6000 Châteaux, Bordeaux is the largest protected designation of origin in France.

Underground Secrets

Saint-Émilion is a charming medieval village known for its red wine and surrounding vineyards. But it also has a unique subterranean heritage, with a network of ancient underground tunnels and chambers. This hidden world contains many different spaces including cellars for storing and aging wine, a vast underground church, and spaces used as a refuge during various conflicts throughout history. Today, visitors can explore this underground world, discovering the historical layers beneath the town's cobbled streets.
