Fun Facts

Human presence in Croatia dates back to the Paleolithic Age

Remains of Neanderthal prehistoric humans as well as archaeological finds such as flints or bones of extinct species have been found throughout the country. Cave sites in Istria and northern Croatia are some of the largest and richest Paleolithic sites in the world and give a fascinating insight into human history.

Croatia has over 1000 islands

The Croatian archipelago has 1,244 natural formations, of which 78 are islands, 524 are islets, 642 are cliffs and reefs, making Croatia a great place for island hopping. Only about 50 of these islands are inhabited. Some of the most famous places include Hvar, celebrated for its rich history and culture, and Vis, a site of breathtaking natural beauty.

Croatia is a haven for nature lovers

As well as stunning coastlines and picture-perfect islands, Croatia boasts 8 national parks, 11 nature parks, and 2 nature reserves. This equals roughly 10% of the country that is protected by these designations, including Plitvice Lakes National Park, which is also listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Over 100 indigenous grape varieties

Croatia has over 100 indigenous grape varieties and a tradition of winemaking that dates back to before the Roman Empire. In the 1990s, Carole Meredith, a grape geneticists and professor at UC Davis, discovered that the Croatian black grape Crljenak Kasteljanski (also known as Pribidrag or Tribidrag) is identical to Zinfandel.
