Fun Facts

Famous Resident

The quaint fishing village of Cojimar holds a special place in literary history as the inspiration for Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Old Man and the Sea." Gregorio Fuentes, first mate on Hemingway’s boat, was said to be the model for the novel's protagonist. Today, the town honors its connection to Hemingway with a bust of the author— a tribute from local fishermen who donated metal for it from their boats.

Hand-made for Centuries

Cuban cigars are meticulously hand-rolled by highly skilled craftsmen, often referred to as "torcedores." Each cigar is created by layering carefully selected tobacco leaves. The process of cutting, bunching, and binding the cigar together has been perfected over the centuries and has changed very little. The unique climate and soil conditions of Cuba are believed to contribute to the exceptional quality and distinct flavors of Cuban cigars, making them highly sought after by cigar enthusiasts worldwide.

A Step back in Time

Cuba is a time capsule of sorts with streets adorned by vintage American cars from the 1950s and earlier. Due to a historical trade embargo and limited access to new vehicles, Cubans have lovingly maintained and repaired these old treasures, relying on ingenuity to keep the cars functioning. These well-preserved classics add a unique charm to Cuba's vibrant streets, offering a nostalgic and picturesque experience for both locals and visitors.

El Malecón

The Malecón is a famous seaside promenade, seawall, and road in Havana, stretching for almost 5 miles along the city's coastline. It's a scenic spot to enjoy sunsets and ocean views as well as a popular gathering place. Both visitors and locals of all ages can be found here strolling, fishing, or socializing. On rough days, waves often break over the seawall.
