Fun Facts

Wine Paradise

Puglia is one of Italy’s top wine-producing regions, known for its ancient vineyards and winemaking traditions that date back over 2,000 years. The Primitivo grape, which is genetically similar to California’s Zinfandel, produces bold, fruity wines with high alcohol content, while Negroamaro is famous for its rich, earthy flavors. The region also grows Verdeca and Fiano, two white grape varieties that are gaining popularity.

Land of Trulli

Puglia is famous for its unique trulli houses, particularly in the town of Alberobello, which has over 1,400 of these unique structures. The trulli are built without mortar, using a prehistoric construction technique involving limestone boulders. Their conical roofs often feature symbolic pinnacles, adding to their distinctive charm. These houses were historically used by farmers and are now an iconic symbol of Puglian architecture and culture.

Olive Oil Production

Puglia is responsible for about 40% of Italy's olive oil production, with more than 60 million olive trees across the region, some of which date back over 1,000 years. These ancient trees, found particularly in the Valle d’Itria and Salento, are an integral part of the region's landscape and history. Olive oil from Puglia is prized for its rich, fruity flavors and is a staple in Italian cuisine, especially in Mediterranean dishes.

Longest Coastline in Mainland Italy

Puglia's 500 miles of coastline stretch along both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, offering a mix of sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and crystal-clear waters. Some of the most famous beach destinations include Polignano a Mare, with its dramatic cliffs and nearby caves, and Torre dell'Orso, known for its golden sand and striking rock formations. The region’s coastline is also dotted with historic watchtowers, used in ancient times to defend against pirate attacks.
